1. The San Francisco F-Line

Many people that visit San Francisco for the first time often ride the historic cable cars that run along Powell and California St.  These cable cars have become iconic in the eyes of tourists everywhere.  However, unbeknownst to some, there is another historic street car that roams the streets of San Francisco: the F-Line

Unlike the other train lines that run in city, the F-Line operates as a heritage street car service.  In 1982, San Francisco had to shut down its cable car service to allow for a major restoration.  Needing another tourist attraction during this time, the city started the San Francisco Historic Trolley Festival.  Vintage street cars from around the world were brought to the city where they traveled from the Transbay Terminal to the Castro.  The festival proved to be so successful, that the city decided to adopt the vintage street cars and make the F-Line a permanent route.

This past Wednesday, I was fortunate enough to attend a fantastic party hosted by The Bold Italic that took place on one of the F-Line’s historic Peter Witt street cars from Milan, Italy.  We traveled from the Castro through downtown and then across the Embarcadero and Fisherman’s Wharf, all while listening to live jazz music, dining on Mediterranean food, and drinking whiskey punch.

If you’re ever visit San Francisco and don’t feel like waiting in line for the cable cars, I’d recommend a small trip on the F-line.  Not only does riding one feel like stepping back in time, but if you board at Castro and get off at Fisherman’s Wharf, you’l also be able to see over a hundred years of San Francisco history.
